Argostoli

THE CAPITAL OF KEFALLONIA

Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia and the Prefecture of Kefallinia, has been the center of the island’s activities since 1757, when there was a significant population movement from the old capital, Agios Georgios, to take advantage of the commercial potential of the gulf. According to the 2011 census, the city has a population of 9,748.

Argostoli is also the capital of the province of Kranea, covering the southern and southwestern part of the island. It is the largest city on the island, connected by ferry to Lixouri, the second largest city. The bay of Argostoli is considered one of the safest ports in the world. The city has a material-rich library, Korgialenio.

Vallianou Square is the most central square in Argostoli, paved with trees and imposing palm trees and surrounded by many cafes and eateries. It is named after Panagis Vallianos, whose statue can be found in the square. To reach Vallianou square, you must cross the cobblestone road, which is lined with small shops on the right and left. At the end of the cobblestones is the Bell Square, historically important because the Libro d’Oro, the book written by the richest families of the Ionian Islands, was burned there. Rizospaston Avenue starts on the other side of the cobblestones, with towering palm trees on its sidewalks and the well-known palm road that leads to the enclosure, a small square full of trees and plants.

The coastal road, which runs along the sea, is a very popular destination for day and night activities, with many shops and a cobbled street for a walk next to the sea. The Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, located at the beginning of the sidewalk to the main square, has important archaeological finds from every corner of the island but is currently closed for public works. Across from the museum are the courts that are still active to this day, with a small square outside surrounded by a few trees and plenty of open space.
