Melissani lake
A HIDDEN GEM IN KEFALONIA WITH ANCIENT ROOTS
Lake Melissani, located in Kefalonia, Greece, is a unique geological wonder. Spanning 160 meters in length and 40 meters in width, it is the only known precipice lake of its kind. The lake’s water is crystal clear and reaches a depth of 39 meters, while its central island features two small hills that are 8 and 9 meters high. A narrow water road between the island and rocky walls leads to the rest of the cave, which is filled with stunning stalactites that are over 20,000 years old.
Archaeological excavations in the area have unearthed significant findings dating back to the 3rd and 4th century BC. These findings include evidence of the worship of the god Pan and the presence of the Nymphs, female figures known throughout mythology.
