Turtle Island
THE NESTING ISLAND OF THE TURTLES - MARATHONISI
Marathonisi Island, a true gem of Zakynthos, captivates visitors every year with its extraordinary features. From the vantage point of Keri, one can easily spot its turtle-shaped morphology, making it an iconic landmark of the island.
The island boasts a deep blue beach with white sand at the front, attracting hundreds of tourists who visit it daily by private boats or larger cruise ships. On the left side of the island, unique small beaches created by nature between the rocks and the caves can be found, reminiscent of scenes from exotic movies. Meanwhile, the island’s two large caves offer a unique place for diving, swimming, and taking unforgettable photos due to their distinct morphology.
As a sanctuary for the endangered caretta-caretta sea turtles, Marathonisi Island’s beach is a crucial nesting site. According to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, the temperature that develops on the spawning beach of the sea turtle results in almost exclusively male turtles being born, while females are born on other beaches of the bay.
While perhaps not as well-known as the “Shipwreck,” Marathonisi Island is sure to steal the heart of any visitor with its crystal clear waters and rare beauty.
